Apple denies allegations from China that the iPhone is a security risk

Allegations were recently made against Apple, saying that the iPhone was a potential security threat for the Chinese government. This news comes after the iPhone finally went on sale in China following six years of negotiations.

Apple recently assured Chinese customers that location tracking on the iPhone cannot be used to track an individual’s location. This news comes just one day after a Chinese television broadcaster said that the iPhone’s operating system, iOS, posed a security risk.

The allegations made against Apple stated that the iPhone could be used to collect data and eventually to leak state secrets. Apple, in response to this, said that it has never “worked with any government agency from any country to create a backdoor in any of our products or services.”

Tracking a user’s location on the iPhone can be used to help speed up applications and help users with things like navigation. Not only that, but location tracking can also be turned off in the phone’s settings.

Apple is one of a number of companies including Google and Facebook that are being criticized by state-run media for potentially aiding cyberspying and hacking. Five Chinese military officers were also recently prosecuted for allegedly hacking into American companies systems.

CCTV, the media network that originally made the allegations, also recently named Microsoft’s Windows 8 as a potential security threat, citing a professor who made the same claims.

The iPhone first went on sale in China in January following six years of negotiations. According to Chief Financial Officer Xue Taohai, of China Mobile Communications Corp., discounts being given to Apple devices are one reason why subsidies on all phones will rise 29 percent to 34 billion yuan ($4.4 billion) this year.

Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California posted their March quarterly earnings, making $9.3 billion from the greater China area alone.
