President Obama says GOP lawsuit will waste America’s time and money

U. S. President Barack Obama said today that the lawsuit House Republicans are planning against him is a waste of America's time and taxpayer money.

During his weekly radio/YouTube address today, U. S. President Barack Obama ridiculed the lawsuit Republican members of the House of Representatives are planning against him. The president warned that the GOP lawmakers will spend American taxpayer dollars on a frivolous legal challenge.

“It’s a political stunt that’s going to waste months of America’s time. And by the way, they’re going to pay for it using your hard-earned tax dollars,” said the president.

Congressman John Boehner, R-Ohio, the Speaker of the House, is orchestrating the lawsuit against the president to challenge his use of executive authority. Boehner and other House Republican leaders have released a draft of the resolution authorizing the suit.

The proposed lawsuit focuses on the decision Obama made to delay implementing a key aspect of the Affordable Care Act, the signature health care legislation the administration guided through Congress in 2010. Issuing an executive order, President Obama delayed putting into effect a provision in the Act that required employers to provide health insurance to full-time employees.

Republicans have asserted the action taken by the president amounted to rewriting the law without a vote by Congress.

The White House and the GOP-controlled House have failed to compromise on myriad issues during the Obama administration. To circumvent the congressional gridlock, the president has taken unilateral executive action. In response, Republicans have alleged Obama has exceeded his authority and is insincere in his expressed desire to work with them.

The actions of the president regarding the health care law give the House the best chance of success in the courts, according to the draft resolution.

The House Rules Committee will meet Wednesday to consider the resolution authorizing the suit. Under House Rules, the House Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, a five-member panel consists of the Speaker of the House, Majority Leader, Majority Whip, Minority Leader, and Minority Whip. Under House rules, “the advisory group has the authority to instruct the non-partisan office of the House General Counsel to take legal action on behalf of the House of Representatives,” according to Boehner’s website.

The full House could vote on the resolution as early as Thursday.
