Actor George Clooney is furious and refusing to accept the Daily Mail's apology for publishing inaccurate information about his future mother-in-law.
George Clooney refuses to accept the Daily Mail’s apology for running a false story that claimed his future mother-in-law was against his upcoming wedding to London-based lawyer Amal Alamuddin.
The Daily Mail initially claimed that Amal’s mother wanted her daughter to marry a member of the Druze religious group that’s prevalent in Lebanon. The article went on to assert that her mother joked with “half of Beirut” about Druze religious traditions that end with the death of the bride.
George Clooney responded by blasting the tabloid for fabricating the story all together and exploiting religious differences. He tried to defend his future bride’s family by shedding light on a tabloid that’s publishing content without verifiable sources.
The tabloid issued a response on Wednesday, denying Clooney’s claims that the article was fabricated. They even cited their source’s reputable journalist connections. Not wanting to admit that they made up the story altogether, the Daily Mail did concede that they “accept Mr. Clooney’s assurance that the story is inaccurate and we apologize.”
George Clooney responded to the Daily Mail in USA Today by calling the tabloid out. He argued that they knew the article wasn’t the truth before running it. He cited an earlier, also inaccurate article published by the Daily Mail. He pointed out that the ridiculous things the tabloid prints are premeditated lies, calling the Daily Mail the worst kind of tabloid.
Although George Clooney thanked the tabloid for its apology, he says he’ll never wholly accept it. There are other options, particularly legal avenues, that Clooney can take against this act of defamation. Those avenues could expose any fraudulent sources utilized by the Daily Mail.
