Microsoft CEO suggests big changes coming to company

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, recently issued a memo suggesting that some big changes would be coming to the company. Many expect these changes to include some large scale layoffs, the company's first since 2009.

According to recent reports, Satya Nadella, the newly appointed CEO of Microsoft, issued a memo the other day suggesting that some big changes are coming to the tech giant.

The memo, titled “Bold Ambition and Our Core,” suggests that the company will layoff a number of employees, something that has been expected of Microsoft for some time now. The memo promises to “flatten the organization and develop leaner business processes.”

Many of these organizational issues will be addressed when the company reports its quarterly earnings on July 22.

It is widely expected that the company will be completely restructured, including a number of layoffs. In fact, since absorbing Nokia, Microsoft has 127,000 employees, which is far more than both Apple and Google. These layoffs would be the company’s first since 2009.

The memo also described Microsoft as a “productivity and platform company” which is focused on mobile and cloud computing. This is different than former CEO Steve Ballmer’s description of the company, which was that it was a “devices and services” company.

While specifics about the changes to come to Microsoft were not given, Nadella certainly showed that he was aware that the company needed changes. Details about specific businesses were also not given, but it was hinted that Nadella intends to develop the Xbox gaming platform, debunking rumors that the company would be shutting down the platform.

Microsoft has showed improvement over the past few months, and confidence in the company has risen due to Nadella’s involvement. Microsoft’s shares rose to $41.90 on Nasdaq, and are up 12 percent since this time last year. Stock in the company is at a 14-year high, the highest since 2000.
