Clooney was unwilling to accept the Daily Mail's apology.
Actor George Clooney is still livid over an article published by the Daily Mail on Monday that claimed his fiancee’s mother objected to their marriage.
In the article, the Daily Mail cited “close family friends” as the sources for their article.
“First of all, none of the story is factually true,” Clooney wrote in USA Today on Wednesday. “Amal’s mother is not Druze. She has not been to Beirut since Amal and I have been dating, and she is in no way against the marriage.”
After reading Clooney’s statement, the Daily Mail issued an apology on the same day. They noted that the story was “not a fabrication but supplied in good faith by a reputable and trusted freelance journalist.” They added, “We accept Mr. Clooney’s assurance that the story is inaccurate and we apologize to him.”
Clooney, however, was unwilling to accept the apology.
Writing in USA Today on Friday, Clooney referenced the Daily Mail’s April article that reported that his fiancee’s father had married outside the Druze faith and that Amal’s mother was not a Druze member.
“What separates this from all of the ridiculous things the Daily Mail makes up is that now, by their own admission, it can be proved to be a lie. In fact, a premeditated lie,” Clooney wrote. “So I thank the Daily Mail for its apology. Not that I would ever accept it, but because in doing so they’ve exposed themselves as the worst kind of tabloid.”
