A jury on Wednesday ordered the Los Angeles Dodgers to pay $15 million in civil damages to a fan that was beaten within an inch of his life during a 2011 assault at their stadium, Reuters reports.

The jury reached its verdict after nine days of deliberations over the lawsuit brought by Bryan Stow, the man and San Francisco Giants fan who was beaten by two Los Angeles Dodgers fans in the Dodger Stadium parking lot after the game. According to Forbes, Stow’s injuries require 24/7 medical help.

The lawsuit was brought by Stow against both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the baseball team’s former owner, Frank McCourt. The lawsuit charged that both the Dodgers and McCourt failed to provide adequate security to prevent this type of violent incident from happening. The jury absolved McCourt.

“He did get some money to help the future and that’s what we wanted – we wanted help,” said Stow’s father, David, according to The Associated Press. “He’s not going to be 100 percent, maybe for a long time, maybe never. What he gets is going to help him through now, and that’s what he needs.”

A different AP report notes that the defense had argued that security was more than adequate at the time of the attack and tried to convinced the jury that Stow was party at fault for the incident because he was intoxicated.
