HBO and Netflix shows dominate nomination list.
Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly announced the nominations for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards today in a pre-drawn presentation at the headquarters of the Television Academy in Los Angeles. HBO’s hit fantasy show Game of Thrones topped the list of nominations, earning an impressive 19 nominations.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling novels, the violent saga about feuding clans vying to take the throne is up for best drama series. Fargo, which is based on the Coen brothers’ 1996 film of the same name, came in just behind Thrones with nominations in 18 categories.
“I feel amazing, effervescent happy cloud nine through the moon; every cliche… for feeling really great.” Billy Bob Thornton told the Hollywood Reporter after being nominated for lead actor in a miniseries for Fargo. “I’m not sure I’ll do much celebrating today, as I’m kind of a hermit. I think the next time I go out will be to attend the Emmys.”
American Horror Story: Coven came in third with 17 nods, followed by 16 for Breaking Bad and The Normal Heart.
HBO shows earned a total of 99 nominations, the most of any network. Just as impressive, online streaming company Netflix proved it can compete with TV networks by doubling its number of nods from last year and earning 31 nominations. Five cast members of Netflix’s breakthrough comedy Orange Is The New Black earned nominations.
“I feel like the happiest girl in the world,” said Laverne Cox, an openly transgender member of the prison show’s cast.
Despite the success of shows like Thrones and Orange at this year’s nomination presentation, several shows with similarly large fan-followings were notably snubbed.
“Losers included Orphan Black and The Walking Dead. For those shows, lots of love from audiences didn’t translate into any nominations in major categories,” said NPR’s Neda Ulaby.
Comedian Seth Myers will host the 66th Primetime Emmys in Los Angeles on Monday, Aug. 25.
