In her new role, Adm. Howard will serve as vice chief of naval operations.
The Navy has named its first female four-star admiral, CNN reports.
Vice Adm. Michelle Howard, who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1982, has been promoted to admiral. In her new role, Adm. Howard will serve as vice chief of naval operations.
“Michelle’s many trailblazing accomplishments in her 32 years of Naval service are evidence of both her fortitude and commitment to excellence and integrity,” said Adm. Jonathan Greenert, chief of Naval operations, according to Boise State Public Radio. “I look forward to many great things to come from the Navy’s newest four-star admiral.”
The Telegraph reports that in 2009 Adm. Howard developed a plan with other military leaders to rescue Capt. Richard Phillips when his cargo ship, the MV Maersk Alabama, was boarded by pirates. Navy SEAL snipers eventually took out the three pirates who had positioned themselves on a small lifeboat along with Capt. Phillips.
In 2008, Army Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody became the military’s first female four-star officer.
