Texas cheerleader stirs controversy with Facebook photos of exotic animal kills

19-year-old Kendall Jones has sparked a petition to have her profile removed.

Cheerleaders are not generally considered threatening, but clearly there is an exception to every rule. 19-year-old Kendall Jones, a cheerleader at Texas Tech University, has sparked massive outrage on Facebook and other media with her Facebook posts detailing her hunts in Africa. Jones is pictured with multiple dead or tranquilized animals, including endangered species, often smiling and holding a weapon over her prey. She adds a short blurb of explanation to each picture.

Negative Facebook responses range from thoughtful questions of how hunting can be humane to more aggressive criticisms and even death threats. There is an official petition on the site asking the executives to make Jones’ remove the photos. The petition reads, “for the sake of all animals, especially the animals in the African region…where hunters are going for fun just to kill an animal!” As of Wednesday morning the petition has over 100,000 signatures.

Jones maintains that her hunting and subsequent posting is all meant to promote animal population control and conservation. She frequently responds to the comments on her page, acknowledging she does not plan to stop hunting or publicizing her work, and hopes to film a television show about her exploits at some point.

Facebook has yet to comment on the scandal.
