The legendary singer never seemed to notice.
With several decades of good music to his name, you would think that giving a Lifetime Achievement award to the legendary singer would be an easy, error-free process. That, however, was not the case on Sunday, Jun. 29. According to AceShowbiz, Richie’s name was misspelled as “Lionel Ritchie” on-screen as he made his way to the stage at the 2014 BET Awards.
The New York Daily News reports that the singer accepted his award after John Legend, Ledisi and Yolanda Adams honored him with a medley of hits from his successful career, as well as his time with the Commodores, an American funk/soul band.
“I have a little motto that I use and I’m going to pass it on to the artists today,” Richie said onstage, according to the Daily News. “Soul is a feeling, not a color. Talent is a God-given gift and not a category.
“And out of the box, out of the box is that magical place where talent — true talent — goes to live and thrive and breathe,” he added. “May you never give that up as long as you’re in this business.”
Richie was so thrilled to receive the Lifetime Achievement award that he never seemed to notice that his name was misspelled. In fact, he spent his time after the event thanking his fellow singers via Twitter.
