Jagger pokes fun at the comedy group in a newly released promotional video.
Monty Python has returned, if only for a short time, and has recruited a famous friend to help with promotions. Lead singer of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, appeared in a comic video shown at the Monty Python London press conference on Monday. In the video, available on YouTube, Jagger is asked by his assistant if he is interested in tickets tone of the reunion shows.
Jagger, who is pictured watching the World Cup, replies distractedly, “Who wants to see that again? It was funny in the 60’s….We’ve seen it all before. I mean, they’ve put it all up on YouTube!”
In a clever nod to critics of aging bands’ “reunion tours,” Jagger also calls Python troupe members, “a bunch of wrinkly old men trying to relive their youth and make a load of money.”
Surviving Python members Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, and Terry Jones did admit in the press conference that money was a factor in their decision to reunite. However, as reported by CNN, Palin said they also felt they were “saying good-bye publicly” to fans. Idle, who is directing the shows, laughed, “Our motto has been ‘leave them wanting less.’”
Monty Python, including Graham Chapman who later died in 1989, formed in 1969, and produced 45 TV episodes and 5 films together. They are performing together live for the first time since 1980. They will perform 10 shows at the O2 arena in London, with the last being broadcast worldwide in cinemas and on TV.
