The world’s first “privacy-optimized smartphone” is on its way to consumers.
According to a press release posted Monday by The Wall Street Journal, a Swiss venture called SGP Technologies SA is shipping handsets for its new privacy smartphone, dubbed Blackphone, to preorder customers around the globe. The phone has collected a good deal of buzz since it was announced earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress event, earning notice at the event as one of “The 10 Best Products at MWC 2014.” The recognition did not end at the mobile event either: The MIT Technology Review also named Blackphone one of the “10 Breakthrough Technologies” of the year.
So what makes Blackphone special? According to the press release for the gadget, it is “the world’s first smartphone built from the ground up to maximize user privacy.” SGP Technologies built a secure operating system called PrivatOS on top of Android’s KitKat OS, and is using that operating system to provide everything from encrypted text message protection to secure access of Wi-Fi hotspots.
Users of the Blackphone also have the power to delete data from their phone remotely, from anywhere in the world. In other words, a Blackphone that is stolen or lost can quickly be entirely wiped, so that personal or otherwise sensitive information does not fall into the wrong hands.
After putting Blackphone up for pre-order in the wake of Mobile World Congress, SGP Tech found the demand for the device overwhelming, and the preorder packages quickly sold out. Now, with those initial preorders currently winging their way toward consumers, SGP Technologies has announced that the phone will be back in stock on its company web store starting on July 14.
