Seth MacFarlane pledges up to $1 million to 'Reading Rainbow' campaign

Seth MacFarlane pledges up to $1 million to 'Reading Rainbow' campaign

'Family Guy' creator makes generous pledge to LeVar Burton's campaign to bring back popular PBS show.

Last month, LeVar Burton launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring back Reading Rainbow, the educational public television series he hosted from 1983 to 2006. The campaign shockingly reached the $1 million mark a mere day after it’s launch, and then doubled that impressive total one day later. With a week to go in his campaign, Burton has raised $4 million of his $5-million goal and will soon receive even more help from an unlikely celebrity donor.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has promised to donate up to $1 million to the campaign, matching whatever money the campaign raises in it’s final few days up to that generous total. As of Friday morning, the campaign stands at over $4.1 million raised from 86,000 people and is set to expire on Wednesday. If pledges help the campaign reach the full $5 million, MacFarlane’s contribution will push Reading Rainbow to $6 million, but his pledge means that less than half a million dollars needs to be raised for the campaign to reach it’s goal.

Reading Rainbow won 26 Emmy Awards and a Peabody during its run on public television. Originally, Burton only hoped to reach $1 million total to relaunch the series, but supporters made it clear that had PBS not run into financial troubles in 2006 and led to the cancellation of the show, they’d still be fans to this day. The overwhelming support encouraged Burton to raise his goal to $5 million, and use the additional funds to launch a new online Reading Rainbow app that will also be available on various mobile devices. He also intends on providing free subscriptions to more than 7,500 classrooms. The app will contain hundreds of children’s books and is expected to resemble the experience of watching the actual show.

Contributors to Burton’s Kickstarter can claim rewards ranging from autographed memorabilia, a private dinner with the actor, and even a chance to put on the visor that he wore on Star Trek.

MacFarlane has not released a statement explaining his reasoning for his generous pledge, but he is a known fan of Star Trek and has used Burton and other members of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast as voice actors on Family Guy.

“Please help me thank my friend, Seth, for his amazing generosity,” Burton wrote on the campaign page. “With his help, we can make an even bigger difference for an entire generation of kids. That’s just huge.”
