The team behind Facebook Home is reportedly no more

Facebook is instead trying to spread its brand out through other channels, purchasing mobile apps like Instagram and WhatsApp that already have a following.

Fans of the forgotten Facebook Home app for Android, if there were any left, will be disappointed to learn that the program is likely on its way out. According to a report published by The New York Times on Friday, Facebook has broken up the team of engineers that worked on Facebook Home, suggesting that the app could be going the way of other failed Facebook projects.

When it was initially announced to the public last spring, Facebook Home was actually a highly anticipated application in the mobile world. The app was going to integrate Facebook more seamlessly with the Android platform, making it possible for mobile users to view photos, send messages, write statuses, and perform other content management tasks, all right from their phone’s home screen. In essence, Facebook Home was supposed to make Facebook more accessible and easier to use on Android.

In actuality, the app had the opposite effect. The app was trashed by tech experts and Android users alike, cited for mediocre functionality almost across the board. Most users actually found it easier to just open up the Facebook mobile app and manage content from there. That Facebook has broken up the engineering team responsible for the app, coupled with the fact that Facebook Home has not been updated in the Android app store since January, more or less proves that the app is DOA.

For Facebook, the Home app is a disappointing failure, but one that has shifted the company’s pursuits in a more favorable direction. For awhile, it seemed as if Facebook was trying to take over the entire mobile experience with its brand. Facebook Home, had it functioned correctly, would have been able to essentially turn Android devices into “Facebook Phones.” Now, Facebook is instead trying to spread its brand out through other channels, purchasing mobile apps like Instagram and WhatsApp that already have a following.
