De Niro joins the list of Hollywood party crashers, all so he could watch the United States in the World Cup.
For a country that celebrates “football” as a sport you play with your hands, many Americans have taken a liking to the sport that shares the name during the FIFA World Cup. Some did whatever they could to watch the US-Germany match on Thursday afternoon. Actor Robert De Niro reportedly went as far as crashing a World Cup party in New York City just to see it.
De Niro was in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood to film The Intern. According to a neighbor, he wanted to take a break to watch the soccer game. The neighbor told Business Insider their apartment building received an email from Warner Bros. asking if they could help De Niro see the game.
“Our lead actor, Robert De Niro, would very much like to watch the World Cup game, today at 12p,” the email said. “Would it be possible to place a small portable satellite on the building rooftop ASAP and run a cable to the street to help facilitate this request?”
The Godfather star wasted no time finding a place on his own. “We got another email from a neighbor saying he talked to the crew and apparently he found a house of people watching it and joined them,” the neighbor said.
De Niro has some Hollywood competition for best party crasher. Last month, Bill Murray gave an impromptu speech at a bachelor party in South Carolina. The “Caddyshack” star crash crashed a couple’s engagement photo shoot in downtown Charleston.
The Intern is the latest from It’s Complicated director Nancy Meyers. It tells the story of a young fashion professional (Anne Hathaway) who hires an older gentleman, played by De Niro, as her intern. It is set to hit theaters in September 2015.
