Nissan cars being probed after unwanted acceleration claims

A federal agency is investigating Nissan Versa and Verse Note cars made between 2012 and 2014 after complaints were filed that a trim panel is resulting in unwanted acceleration.

The government’s road safety agency is investigating claims from drivers of Nissan Versa model cars, that a trim panel is causing the car to accelerate against the driver’s will.  360,000 cars produced between 2012 and 2014 are involved in the investigation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, four drivers have claimed that the trim panel in question, located near the gas pedal, can trap the edge of the drivers shoe, resulting in the driver being unable to remove their foot from the gas pedal quickly.

While no drivers have claimed that the issue has resulted in an accident, one driver said that he had a close call in an intersection on June 9. As the driver was accelerating to make a left turn, the trim panel trapped his shoe and stopped him from being able to remove his foot from the pedal.

“I used my right hand to grab my leg and pulled harder, immediately braking hard, then backing my foot off the brake as I squealed and skidded around the corner, almost going over the curb and crashing,” the driver wrote in his complaint. According to the driver, the trim panel was not properly secured.

While the drivers who filed complaints with the NHTSA are not identified, two of the complaints were from drivers of rental cars. Also, a fifth complaint was made by a driver in an unidentified foreign country.

In some cases these investigations can lead to recalls, but so far this is not the case in this situation. Nissan has not yet made a comment on the situation.
