Nestle ice creams being recalled due to allergen risk

Recall of certain Häagen-Dazs ice creams issued by Nestlé USA

Nestlé USA issued a press release on Friday, June 27 informing the public of a large recall of 10 000 cartons of Häagen-Dazs ice cream. The recall was due to mismatched packaging reported by a consumer to Nestlé, according to the release.

The products in question are 14-ounce cartons that have the lid labelled as Häagen-Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter, while the tubs are labelled as Chocolate Chocolate Chip ice cream. The cartons have a UPC code of 74570-08400, a best by date of 13 May 2015 and a manufacturing code of 24-52 4133580418D.

The cartons contain Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream, but as the label promotes Chocolate Chocolate Chip ice cream, it does not indicate the inclusion of peanuts. This poses a serious health hazard to unsuspecting consumers who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts. The allergic reaction to the consumption of peanuts can range from mild to severe to potentially life-threatening.

The mismatched cartons were produced on May 13, and have been widely distributed across the Eastern United States. Areas affected include the District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina,  New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

The release further cited that the recall only affected production dates, sizes or flavours of the Häagen-Dazs brand cited above.  The recall is also not in effect north of the border, in Canada.

Nestlé is in the process of investigating the incident further, while also implementing the recall in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Efforts are further being made by Nestlé and the Food Allergy Research & Education to alert and educate consumers who may be affected by the recall.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled product can call 800-993-8924 or visit www.haagen-dazs.com for more information.
