In tech-specific job categories, Facebook’s gender and ethnic disparities are even more pronounced.
Facebook released publicly its current diversity figures this week, revealing a workforce that is 91 percent White and Asian in the U.S., and nearly 70 percent male worldwide.
“We have a long way to go, but we’re absolutely committed to achieving greater diversity at Facebook and across the industry,” said Maxine Williams, Facebook’s Global Head of Diversity, in a blog post introducing the data.
In tech-specific job categories, Facebook’s gender and ethnic disparities are even more pronounced. The social network’s global tech workforce is an eye-popping 85 percent male and 94 percent White and Asian. In non-tech jobs, the numbers are a bit better, with women making up 47 percent of the non-tech workforce.
“As these numbers show, we have more work to do– a lot more,” said Williams. “But the good news is that we’ve begun to make progress.”
Facebook’s diversity report additionally outlines a number of programs and strategies the company is implementing to help increase the overall pool of talent from underrepresented communities. These strategies include partnering with other organizations working to achieve the same goal, and developing new recruiting strategies to attract diverse candidates.
The social network is hardly alone in the tech-sector when it comes to a lack of diversity. Last month, Google disclosed that its workforce was 70 percent male and 61 percent White.
“We’re not where we want to be when it comes to diversity,” the company said in a statement.
