Co-hosts Sherri Shepherd, Jenny McCarthy fired from 'The View'

Co-hosts Sherri Shepherd, Jenny McCarthy fired from 'The View'

Following Walters retirement, Whoopi Goldberg is the only co-host to keep her job.

Founding host Barbara Walters left ABC’s The View in May, and co-hosts Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy are soon to follow suit.

However, while Walters, 84, chose to retire, Shepherd and McCarthy’s departure is not of their own choosing.

Network sources told TMZ that McCarthy, 41, and Shepherd, 47, were fired following a later afternoon meeting at ABC on Thursday.

Shepherd has spent seven seasons on the show — McCarthy, just one.

Shepherd confirmed the news of her departure Thursday evening via Twitter.

The number 7 is God’s number of completion (and) after 7 seasons my time at The View is now complete!” tweeted Shepherd. “So grateful (to everyone for) their love (and) support.”

McCarthy also made public comments via Twitter. Rather confusingly, McCarthy commented, “If Sherri goes… I go too.” She added the hash tag “sisters.”

My View will be changing too,” noted McCarthy, in a different tweet. “As will with many hard working (sic) folks. Thanks to everyone at the show for your dedication and an amazing year.”

Executive producer Bill Geddie was also given his walking papers.

Whoopi Goldberg, 58, is the only co-host to keep her job.

The topical daytime television show has seen many incarnations in its 17 seasons, but this latest season — after bringing on McCarthy — has arguably been the roughest for ratings. Many critics felt that hiring McCarthy was a mistake.

Network sources indicate that retired boxer Laila Ali was suggested as a possible co-host replacement, as was former host Rosie O’Donnell.

In addition, show creators are reportedly debating the idea of introducing a male voice to the panel. American personality Ross Mathews and Jesse Palmer, a sports commentator and former football player, were mentioned as possible co-hosts.

Former host Walters was the show’s Friday guest, the first guest following the news of the shake-up.

The show was filmed Wednesday — the day before the meeting in which the network executives made the decision to fire Shepherd and McCarthy.
