Man in custody in connection with bodies found in suitcases

The security contractor has not been charged with a crime as of Wednesday afternoon.

Badger State police have taken 52-year-old Stephen Zelich into custody in connection with the bodies of two women found in suitcases earlier this month, USA Today reports.

According to a statement released by the Town of Geneva Police Department, victim number one has been identified as 37-year-old Laura Simonson from Farmington, Minnesota. As of Wednesday, victim number two has not been identified. Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the second victim.

Citing Police Chief Steven R. Hurley, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Zelich, a licensed private security officer, is linked to a sadomasochistic web forum and is a suspect in Simonson’s death. Simonson and the unidentified woman’s bodies were discovered inside two suitcases found June 5 in the Town of Geneva.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel also notes that WTMJ-TV and WISN-TV reported that Zelich is a former West Allis police officer. These reports were neither confirmed nor denied by West Allis Police Chief Charles Padgett when asked by the newspaper.

According to the Los Angeles Times, police have not revealed what relationship, if any, existed between Zelich and the women. The security contractor has also not been charged with a crime as of Wednesday afternoon.
