Congress celebrates 30th anniversary of Prince's 'Purple Rain'

Two politicians record video covers of popular Prince songs to celebrate 'Purple Rain' milestone.

Prince’s legendary album Purple Rain was released exactly thirty years ago from Wednesday, and members of Congress are celebrating the anniversary in a very surprising way.

Purple Rain is Prince’s sixth studio album and acted as the soundtrack album to the 1984 film of the same name. The album was ranked as the 76th greatest album ever by Rolling Stone, and two politicians proved their love for the album and “The Purple One” on Wednesday by posting public videos in which they perform some of Prince’s greatest hits.

Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, whose 5th district includes Prince’s Paisley Park studios, posted a Vine video of himself performing an acoustic cover of the title song “Purple Rain.”

“Can’t believe it’s been thirty years since #Purple Rain,” said Ellison in the tweet that accompanied the song clip.

This isn’t the first time Ellison shared his love for cultural expression of an acoustic guitar cover with the public; the politician covered Woody Guthrie last year when Minnesota legalized same-sex marriage.

Several fans were quick to point out that Ellison messed up some of Prince’s lyrics, noting that he sang “I never meant to cause you any problems” instead of “I never meant to cause you any sorrow.” The politician quickly responded with “Call it artistic interpretation.”

New York Rep. Joe Crowley, fresh off a primary victory without opposition on Tuesday, followed Ellison’s lead and posted a Vine of himself singing “Raspberry Beret” off of Prince’s 1985 album Around the World in a Day a few hours later.

“All due respect to #purplerain, Keith Ellison, I’m partial to #raspberryberet,” wrote Crowley along with his video.

As of Wednesday evening, the tweet which contains Ellison’s Prince cover was the fan-favorite with 133 retweets and 113 favorites, while Crowley’s tweeted cover had 48 retweets and 33 favorites.
