The third film hits theaters on November 21.
A personal message from President Snow was broadcast via Capitol TV as the first teaser from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I debuted on Wednesday.
The teaser features Snow, played by Donald Sutherland, calmly and authoritatively addressing the camera, seated before a backdrop of the Capitol logo. He talks about the importance of the relationship between the districts and the Capitol, extolling the benefits of unity and prosperity. But above all, sacrifice is the most important virtue of all.
“Your districts are the body, the Capitol is the beating heart,” Snow says. “But if you resist the system, you starve yourself. If you fight against it, it is you who will bleed. I know you’ll stand with me, with us, with all of us. Together. As one. Panem today. Panem tomorrow. Panem forever.”
His tone toward the end is undeniably menacing and it is clear to everyone who has read the books or seen the films that he is addressing none other than Katniss Everdeen. Her tribute partner, Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson, standing silent to the right of Snow looking into the camera.
The teaser is the first look fans are getting at the next installment in the Hunger Games franchise and it sets a dark and ominous tone for the events that will take place in the third film, which hits theaters on November 21.
Mockingjay is the final book in the Hunger Games trilogy but with the worldwide popularity of the franchise, Lionsgate elected to split the adaptation into two films. A move that proved successful for Warner Bros. and their Harry Potter franchise, which resulted in the release of two features from the final book in that series.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I stars Jennifer Lawrence reprising her role as Katniss Everdeen, alongside Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence who also helmed the previous installment, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
