Frances Bean Cobain responds to Del Rey's remark "romanticizing" death.
Musician Lana Del Rey made headlines earlier this month for stating “I wish I was dead already,” a remark which followed a discussion of the premature deaths of artists like Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain. Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of the legendary Nirvana frontman, has since taken to Twitter to criticize Del Rey for “romanticizing” the death of her father.
Del Rey’s remark about wishing she were dead came from an interview with The Guardian‘s Tim Jonze where she was talking about the heroes she and her boyfriend share. When Winehouse and Cobain’s names were brought up, Jonze pointed out the common link of their tragic early deaths and asked if Del Rey sees early death as glamorous. She reportedly replied, “I don’t know. Ummm, yeah.”
Frances Bean Cobain was just a baby when her 27-year-old father died in 1994. In her Twitter post to Del Rey, which has since been deleted, the 21-year-old wrote:
“The death of young musicians isn’t something to romanticize. I’ll never know my father because he died young and it becomes a desirable feat because people like you think it’s ‘cool’. Well, it’s f— not. Embrace life, because you only get one life.”
“I’m not attacking anyone. I have no animosity towards Lana, I was just trying to put things in perspective from personal experience,” she later clarified.
This feud interestingly comes after claims by Del Rey that Frances’ mother Courtney Love is a personal friend and inspiration to her.
“Courtney Love’s a big inspiration. I like her, I talk to her a lot. I just went (to) her show… when she was playing in London. I like people who are similar to her, like Joni Mitchell types or Stevie Nicks, who are both strong female characters,” said Del Rey in an interview with France Inter.
