Gary Oldman rails against 'political correctness' in Playboy, defends Mel Gibson

Oldman seemingly defends Mel Gibson in new interview.

Gary Oldman isn’t afraid of strong opinions. In a long, in-depth interview with Playboy magazine due to hit stands on Friday June 27, the Batman actor, 56, goes on an extended rant about the “hypocrisy” surrounding Mel Gibson’s arrest in 2006 and subsequently infamous anti-Semitic comments to the arresting officer.

After a casual reference to Gibson, Oldman is asked for more thoughts by the reporter, and says, “I just think political correctness is crap. That’s what I think about it. I think it’s like, take a fucking joke. Get over it.” He argues that Gibson’s choice of words could have been made by anyone, explaining, “I don’t know about Mel. He got drunk and said a few things, but we’ve all said those things. We’re all f—ing hypocrites. That’s what I think about it.” He laments that Gibson is an “outcast, a leper” because Hollywood is “run by Jews” and “we all hide and try to be so politically correct.”

Oldman finishes the rant with a laugh and a request to the reporter to “edit and cut half of what I’ve said, because it’s going to make me sound like a bigot… [I’m not] but I’m defending all the wrong people.”

Speaking to the Independent, Oldman’s spokesperson, Douglas Urbanski, made sure to clarify that Oldman was not trying to “defend” Gibson but instead was fixating on one of his personal causes. “Political correctness is a thing that drives Gary…crazy,” he said.
