Disney is keeping quiet, but a number of sources have confirmed that Rian Johnson will be a part of the new "Star Wars" trilogy.
Rian Johnson is the talk of movie fans this weekend, and for a pretty big reason: He has reportedly been chosen to work on the new trilogy of Star Wars films produced by Disney.
Johnson, 40, will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. He will also write the initial script for the third installment of the trilogy, Episode IX. These films are set to follow Star Wars: Episode VII, currently in production with director J.J. Abrams.
Johnson’s resume thus fair is pretty impressive. He’s known for his original films, like his award-winning 2005 debut Brick and 2012 sci-fi film Looper. He also directed three episodes of Breaking Bad.
While Disney has not yet confirmed the latest news, they have released many details for the upcoming films. Disney announced the film’s leading cast members in May, which will see the return of franchise veterans Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. Newcomers such as Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and Daisy Ridley will join the original cast. Disney will also produce stand-alone Star Wars films that will be released between the three new trilogy films, the first of which will be directed by Godzilla filmmaker Gareth Edwards. They are expected to focus on several of the main characters.
Fans of the franchise have been avidly following production developments on Episode VII, which is currently filming in multiple locations including the historic Pinewood Studios outside London. Ford recently broke his leg on set, and is currently recuperating while filming continues without him. The film is scheduled for release in December 2015; the others will be released in 2016 and 2017.
