Forget late night, Chelsea Handler goes to Netflix

Despite being courted by CBS, Chelsea Handler is dropping her E! television series to move to the popular streaming service, Netflix!

Chelsea Handler is leaving her E! channel late night show called Chelsea Lately on August 26th to star in Netflix’s first-ever talk show.

Rumors started in April of this year that Chelsea Handler would drop her contract with Comcast’s E! channel as soon as it expired. There were signs that Handler might move to CBS for either their 12:30am opening or for the coveted The Late Show spot, open due to David Letterman’s retirement.

Some also speculated that Handler would take over for Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show after Handler tweeted a picture of herself at CBS.

Chelsea Handler’s new show on Netflix demonstrates how the streaming service is redefining itself in this new generation. Its success with its original programming, including Orange is the New Black and House of Cards establishes itself firmly as a creator of media content.

Netflix is no longer just a place to watch movies and popular TV shows from other networks. Once Chelsea Handler’s talk show begins in 2016, Netflix will have ventured into almost all genres featured on a traditional broadcast network.

Netflix is now available to consumers through smart TVs, smart phones, gaming consoles, computers, among others. Its low monthly subscription price and wide selection of quality content is responsible for many subscribers of traditional cable “cutting the cord” and turning to Netflix for their TV viewing needs.

Chelsea Handler, in addition to the talk show, is a comedian and the author of several bestsellers including My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands and Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea.
