Fans of the BBC show Blackadder are in mourning once again as another beloved member of the cast has passed away in as many weeks.
Actress Patsy Byrne, best known for her portrayal as Nursie, the kindhearted chambermaid to Queen Elizabeth I in the second series of the popular British comedy, has passed away at the age of 80.
Her death occurred on Tuesday, June 17 at Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors located in northwest London, one week after fellow actor and comedian Rik Mayall passed away unexpectedly at his home. He played Lord Flashheart on the same run of the Blackadder series in 1986.
Byrne was raised in Ashford, Kent where she attended the Ashford School for Girls before studying drama at Rose Bruford College in Kent. From there, she became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and went on to have a prolific career on stage and television, with roles in many major British television series such as I, Claudius, Watching, and the police show Z Cars.
But it was her work alongside Miranda Richardson on the Rowan Atkinson series Blackadder that gave her the most acclaim. The show’s producer John Lloyd paid loving tribute to the actress during an interview on BBC 5.
“It’s ironic that she will be remembered for that lovable, slightly idiotic person with that ludicrous drawl, but she was a proper actress: with the RSC, she played Chekhov opposite Rex Harrison, was incredibly well spoken, but she would put up with our little ways,” Lloyd said. “The rehearsals on Blackadder were interminable, with us changing our minds all the time she was always on top of it and she never complained. We had famous actors walk out of rehearsals because it was such a nightmare and shambles. But with Patsy there was never a peep of complaint.”
