Samsung to release smartwatch for Android

Google unveiled the Android Wear platform this past March, calling it a modified version of Android that is based heavily on Google Now voice-recognition technology.

Fresh off the release of the Gear 2 smartwatch – running on Tizen, Samsung’s in-house operating system – the South Korean electronics company plans to introduce its first Android Wear device at Google’s developer conference next week, according to a CNET report.

Sources familiar with the matter confirmed to CNET that the device will be a smartwatch, similar to Samsung’s Gear watches released over the past year.

The sources revealed that during the testing phase Samsung experimented with different versions of the watch running both the company’s own Exynos chips – as do all Gear watches – and another version using Qualcomm’s chips. It remains undisclosed which version of the watch will ultimately be released, CNET reports.

With the move, Samsung appears unconcerned that the new Android Wear device will cannibalize sales of smartwatches running its own Tizen operating system. But this strategy fits with what Ars Technica dubs Samsung’s “spaghetti-wall approach to product development.”

“The company is more than content to iterate constantly and quickly, waiting just a few months between releases in an effort to find a sales success.”

Google unveiled the Android Wear platform this past March, calling it a modified version of Android that is based heavily on Google Now voice-recognition technology.

“We’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s possible with mobile technology,” said Google Senior Vice President for Android, Chrome and Apps, Sundar Pichai in a blog post. “That’s why we’re so excited about wearables—they understand the context of the world around you, and you can interact with them simply and efficiently, with just a glance or a spoken word.”
