A number of bodies are discovered.
The issue of immigration continues to rear it’s ugly head in the news, as dozens of migrant bodies are found buried outside the U.S. and Mexico border, neighboring a South Texas cemetery, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports. The bodies are unidentified, according to officials. Bodies and remains were found in trash or shopping bags, some stuffed between other coffins.
Researchers reportedly exhumed 52 grave sites, but 110 remains were found at the Sacred Heart Burial Park in Falfurrias.
“To me it’s just as shocking as the mass grave that you would picture in your head, and it’s just as disrespectful,” says Krista Latham, one of the anthropologists from the University of Indianapolis. Many say it resembled more of a trash dump than a cemetery. The sanctity of the identified migrants are completely tarnished and that carries over to the families of the lost, not knowing what ever became of them.
County officials send migrant bodies over to Funeraria del Angel Howard-Williams, a local funeral home. This has been routine for many years, but the there has yet to be any comment on the burial procedures or practices.
“Certain records related to these burials, but this does not amount to confirmation that Howard-Williams was involved in depositing the remains in the manner the researchers described,” says a spokesperson.
It takes issues such as this to incite some kind of movement or change in the system, but the fact of the matter is the issue has been rampant for sometime. This event only solidifies the magnitude to which it has grown.
