Facebook experienced a power outage on Thursday, reportedly costing the company $500,000. This, however, is not the first time that they've experienced an outage.
Facebook users around the world were probably aware of the power outage the social media giant suffered on Thursday, which lasted around half an hour. Users may not be aware, however, of the effects that the outage had on Facebook itself. Reportedly, the power outage may have cost the company up to $500,000.
Users reported that upon attempting to log into their Facebook account, they were given a message reading “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”
“Earlier this morning, we experienced an issue that prevented people from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time,” said Iain Waterman, a Facebook spokesman. “We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
This power outage is not the first the company has experienced since it was first created in 2004. In fact, the company experienced a 2.5 hour power shortage back in 2010, which also prompted the company to release an apology statement.
A report released by Forbes estimates that the half-hour shortage experienced on Thursday cost the company $500,000. According to the report, however, the financial damage done to Facebook won’t be too severe, considering the company makes around $1.16 million in ad revenue per hour.
“For a company that has already spent close to $20 billion this year on acquisitions, that’s not much of a mosquito bite,” says the Forbes report.
While the outage may have led to a number of angry Facebook users, the good news for users is that this kind of occurrence is rare for the company.
