Biopic about rap group N.W.A. finally gets its cast and release date.
Universal Pictures announced today its plans to release its N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton next year, after more than five years of delays.
The film will be set in mid-1980s Compton, and “chronicle how five young men translated their experiences growing up in the hood into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation, and revolutionized music and pop culture forever while igniting a cultural war.”
The project has been delayed several times over the past five years due to producers Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E’s widow Tomica Woods-Wright having the power to sign off on the actors who will play the core members of the seminal rap group and holding script veto power. After turning down several scripts and actors, the trio has agreed to finally cast O’Shea Jackson Jr. as the teen version of his father Ice Cube, Non-Stop star Corey Hawkins as Dre, and Jason Mitchell, who previously appeared alongside Mark Wahlberg in Universal’s Contraband as the late Eazy-E. An image released by Universal today shows Jackson Jr., Hawkins, and Mitchell alongside the real Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and director F. Gary Gray. It is still unclear who will play N.W.A.’s three other principal members, DJ Yella, MC Ren, and Arabian Prince.
The film comes from a script overhaul by Jonathan Herman. Matt Alvarez will produce, and Will Packer will serve as executive producer alongside Gray.
Principal photography for Straight Outta Compton, which is slated for release on Aug. 14, 2015, will begin in less than two months.
