The legendary director takes a shot at adapting a beloved Broadway musical.
Fans of the highly popular Broadway musical Jersey Boys have plenty to look forward to this weekend. The movie adaptation of Jersey Boys debuts in theaters with actor/director Clint Eastwood behind the camera.
Jersey Boys tells the biography of the musical quartet the Four Seasons during the 1960s, focusing on lead singer Frankie Valli. The story is accompanied by music defined during the time period including the most popular songs from the Four Seasons’ time in the spotlight.
The Broadway musical became a sensation but attempts at a Hollywood film release fell through due to complications. The project was revived when Eastwood approached Warner Bros with intentions to direct.
“I couldn’t understand quite why after nine years on Broadway, somebody didn’t want to do it,” said Eastwood.
The writers of the original musical production Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice were brought in at the request of Eastwood to pen the screenplay. Original cast members of the show were approached to star in the film including John Lloyd Young returning to play the lead role of Frankie Valli.
Young accepted the role upon hearing that Eastwood would be the man behind the camera for the film adaptation of the musical that won Young a Tony Award in 2006.
“We knew there was no chance in hell it would be turned into fluff,” said Young.
The new film will mark Eastwood’s 12th film as director since the movie star turned 70-years-old. Eastwood gave some insight into how he still manages to be one of the most hardworking directors in Hollywood.
“I just never let the old man in. I was always looking for new things to do. I rightfully or wrongly always thought I could do anything,” said Eastwood in a recent interview.
Even after working in Hollywood for 60 years, Eastwood is far from calling it quits since he just wrapped a Navy SEAL drama with Bradley Cooper. That along with Jersey Boys will make two films in one year.
Jersey Boys hits theaters Friday, Jun. 20.
