Whoops: Miss USA Nia Sanchez doesn't know Nevada's capital

Nia Sanchez forgets the capital city of her claimed home state during an interview.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez may have provided good answers during her pageant’s interview section, but she seems to be struggling now. As reported by US Magazine, Sanchez, 24, was unable to name the capital city of Nevada, the state she represents, in a radio interview on Monday. The gaffe added fuel to the fire surrounding Sanchez, a fourth-degree karate black belt and professional model, who has been accused of faking her residency in Nevada.

After Sanchez was crowned Miss USA in Baton Rouge on June 8, Fox 411 published allegations from an unnamed source claiming she didn’t really live in Nevada but established a false residency there to take advantage of a less-competitive pageant market. The source indicated that Sanchez had been working at Disneyland in Anaheim through late 2013 and had only chosen to represent Nevada after repeatedly failing to win the state title in California.

Sanchez has refuted the allegations, telling Fox in a one-to-one interview that there was “no truth” to the claims. “[Las Vegas] is my home…I have a house there with a friend,” she said, explaining that she had moved for work and only afterwards decided to become involved with Nevada’s pageant program.

The Las Vegas Sun also defends Sanchez, reporting that her Nevada driver’s license was issued in January 2013, establishing her residency long before the Miss USA required six-month period. Pageant president Paula Shugart was quoted as saying the organization “had no reason” to question Sanchez’s residency and was “thrilled” with her victory.
