Steve Martin dismisses 'Father Of The Bride 3' rumors

A report is swirling that a gay-themed sequel to the 1991 film is on the way.

Yet another sequel may be coming to Hollywood. Hollywood journalist Nikki Finke published a report on Sunday claiming Father of the Bride 3 is being produced. She states that Warner Brothers is sorting out the rights to the movie, which will have a gay angle.

Father of the Bride (itself a remake of a 1950 movie starring Spencer Tracy) debuted in 1991, with Father of the Bride Part 2 arriving in 1995. Both films starred Steve Martin and Diane Keaton as the parents of the titular bride, played by Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and a son Matty, played by Kieran Culkin. According to Finke, Father of the Bride 3 will revolve around a grown-up Matty revealing his upcoming wedding to the son of a Navy SEAL. Martin’s character, George Banks, will apparently struggle to come to terms with his son’s homosexuality. Finke writes that her source calls the plot “a timely idea.”

Nancy Meyers directed the first two films, with her now ex-husband Charles Shyer wrote the scripts. Meyers has reportedly opted out of directing the threequel, but Shyer is attached as both screenwriter and director. Finke did not comment on whether the original cast would be returning but Steve Martin addressed rumors of the film on Monday, tweeting, “So excited to read I’m doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven’t seen a script or been offered the role!”

Warner Brothers has not made an official comment on the report.
