Newly-crowned Miss USA Nia Sanchez responds to residency controversy

Days after being crowned Miss USA, Nia Sanchez responds to rumors that she lied about living in Nevada to get an easier path to the tiara.

Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez took the Miss USA tiara last week, but new rumors that she faked her Nevada residency in order to participate in the competition are leading many to question if she is deserving of her new title. Sources recently told Fox News that Sanchez left a “minimum paper trail” connecting her to Nevada, but she was actually residing in California.

According to the unknown source, Sanchez was working at Disneyland when she took the Miss Nevada title and had unsuccessfully competed in Miss California USA competitions three times.

In a statement released Monday, Sanchez denied these allegations:

“I have lived in Nevada since fall of 2012 and it was an honor for me to represent the state at Miss USA.”

“I thought about entering the 2013 pageant, but it would have only been five months, so I didn’t because I wanted everything to be absolutely right. I didn’t want to do anything wrong with the residency requirement. I waited the full year and more. There’s no truth to these pageant claims. I did everything right. I have a house there with a friend, and Las Vegas is my home. I love the community.”

Judges in the 2014 Miss Nevada USA Pageant were shown proof that she met the pageant’s six-month residency requirements, and the Miss Universe organization is confident that Sanchez did not falsify her eligibility credentials and has given her their full support during this controversy.

“Nia Sanchez was issued a Nevada driver’s license in January of 2013, a full year before she competed at the Miss Nevada USA pageant,” stated pageant President Paula Shugart. “The Miss Universe Organization has no reason to question her residency and we are thrilled to welcome her to the organization and look forward to working with her in the coming year.”

However, the situation was only made more confusing when Sanchez was asked to name the capital of Nevada on today’s “The Todd Show” on 95.5 WPLJ in NYC and failed to come up with the correct answer.

“Oh, um, ah, oh my gosh,” said a flustered Sanchez before the host finally chimed in with the correct response of Carson City.
