This season has been filled with thrilling and horrifying moments.
Fans are still gasping at last night’s action-packed season finale for Game of Thrones. Four characters met their demise in this episode, but the surprises have been coming throughout the season. Here are the ten most shocking moments from season four:
1. The wedding of King Joffery
What should have been a happy occasion ended in tragedy as the boy king was poisoned and died during the ceremony. On the bright side, this wedding had just one victim, while the earlier nuptials in season three that saw most of the guests slaughtered in an ambush.
2. Jamie rapes his sister.
If that weren’t bad enough, he did it on the tomb of fallen King Joffery. While earlier episodes had softened his image, Jaime ruined all that when he responded to Cersei’s rejection by pushing her to the floor and raping her.
3. Khaleesi crucifies the Masters.
After seeing child slaves murdered by crucifixion, Khaleesi orders a similar fate for 163 Masters. Despite sage advice from Ser Barristan, she demands her revenge.
4. Caster sacrifices his baby.
Episode four ended with Caster taking one of his children to the woods and abandoning it on the ground. The white walker, who has last seen at the end of the second season, appears and picks up the baby. When he touches the baby’s cheek, we see its eyes turn ice-blue.
5. The trial of Tyrion
Peter Dinklage won an Emmy for his impassioned speech at the end of this sham of a trial. The proceedings had been carefully orchestrated so that Tyrion would be found guilty, despite Jaime’s pleas to his father that resulted in a deal sparing his life. The treacherous testimony of Shae drives Tyrion into a frenzy that leads him to “confess” to “the crime of being a dwarf.”
6. The death of Lysa
New bride Lysa Tully is shocked to find Littlefinger kissing Sansa, but he placates her by promising to send her rival away. Instead, he tells Lysa that the only one he ever loved was her sister Caitlin. Littlefinger then pushes Lysa out the moon door to her death.
7. The fight of The Mountain and Oberyn Martell
For sheer horror, few moments in the history of Game of Thrones could top the trial by combat between The Mountain and Oberyn Martell. Oberyn gets an early advantage and nearly kills his foe, but makes the mistake of demanding that The Mountain confess to the murder of his sister. The Mountain responds by admitting everything while clutching the throat of his rival, then recreating the earlier murder by punching out Oberyn’s teeth, gouging his eyeballs and making his head explode.
8. Child burned by dragons
A peasant brings the charred bones of his three-year old daughter to Khaleesi after the child was burned to death by dragons. Daenerys later leads her two smaller dragons into a cave where she places metal collars on their necks.
9. The death of The Hound
After Brienne of Tarth demands that The Hound hand over Arya Stark, a duel ensues that leaves Brienne badly beaten. She triumphs in the end by pushing The Hound over a cliff and leaving him for dead.
10. Tyrion gets his revenge.
Rather than fleeing the castle after being set free from his cell by his brother Jaime, Tyrion goes looking for his father in his bedroom. When he finds Shae waiting on the bed, the two fight until Tyrion strangles her. After grabbing a crossbow off the wall, he continues to search for his father. When he finds him on the toilet, Tyrion shoots him twice with the crossbow.
