James Franco to make theatrical directing debut

'The Long Shrift' will mark the actor's directorial debut for the stage.

James Franco, 36, can now add theatre director to his long list of arts and culture occupations.

The New York Times reports that the actor-writer-poet-professor is slated to direct The Long Shrift by short story writer and novelist Robert Boswell.

Boswell has written seven novels, three short story collections and two works of non-fiction. He previously wrote Tongues for the stage.

His most recent contribution to playwriting tells the story of a man who has recently been released from prison. He was incarcerated for a rape that he was accused of committing as a teen, nine years earlier. The protagonist suddenly finds his accuser back in his life.

The Long Shrift, which runs from July 7 to Aug. 24, will be performed off-Broadway at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre during its 20th anniversary season.

The play stars Scott HazeAhna O’ReillyBrian LallyAllie Gallerani and Ally Sheedy.

Franco currently stars in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, which is scheduled to run through July 27. His Of Mice and Men performance is the actor’s Broadway stage debut.

The actor has also been promoting the film Palo Alto, a move in which he stars that is based on his collection of short stories of the same name. Scribner published the collection in 2010. Gia Coppola directed the movie and adapted it for the screen.

The Long Shrift is Franco’s theatrical directing debut.
