'Daily Show' makes a laughing stock out of Google Glass Explorers [VIDEO]

Comedy Central's Jason Jones assembled a group of six Glass Explorers to discuss the merits of wearing Google Glass.

Over the past year or so, numerous tales of Google Glass users – or “Explorers,” as they are called by Google’s beta test unit – have made nationwide headlines. The epitome of such Explorers includes Cecilia Abadie, who received a traffic ticket for wearing the Glass while driving, but then managed to invalidate the ticket by allegingher Glass device had not actually been powered up, but had just been sitting on her face. Another was Nick Starr, who was kicked out of a Seattle restaurant for wearing his Google Glass and refusing to take it off.

Abadie, Starr, and numerous other Glass Explorers have come to consider themselves as the subjects of discrimination or unfair treatment, a fact The Daily Show‘s Jason Jones had a lot of fun with on a segment last Thursday night. Jones assembled a group of six Glass Explorers, including Abadie and Starr, who feel they have been discriminated against since putting on the Google Glass.

As Jones listened to the stories of oppression from his interview subjects, he looked confused, stopping them with the question, “Hold on a second, what the f*** have you got on your faces?”

Jones went on to poke fun at the idea of Google Glass Explorers being an oppressed group, implied the Glass looks completely ridiculous, discussed the ability of the Glass device to take pictures and video covertly (and the troubling privacy questions raised by such a capabilities), and askedwhy the Glass is better than a smartphone, essentially equipped with all the same features. Starr told Jones  the Glass keeps you “in the here and now,” whereas with a smartphone, you have to take it out of your pocket, unlock it, and look down instead of staying engaged with a conversation.

“The best uses of Glass today are apps where it acts as an interface between you and the real world,” one of the Glass Explorers stated.

“Do you guys hear yourself when you talk? An interface between you and the real world? Those are called eyes,” Jones quickly countered.

In order to experience the “oppression” of the Google Glass group, Jones decided to don a pair of the glasses himself and head out into the public. “But since $1,500 is roughly a down payment on a new car, I made my own,” Jones’ narration reads, the camera panning up to show a piece of headgear resembling an assembled disposable camera, an Xbox Live headset, and a hands-free iPhone holder. His ultimate advice for Glass owners wanting to avoid discrimination and ridicule? “Take them the f*** off.”
