Rick Perry wants to bring Tesla to Texas

Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas are all reportedly in the running for the electric car maker’s “Gigafactory."

Texas Governor, Rick Perry (R) spent this past week traveling around California, raising money for GOP candidates. His ride of choice? The Tesla.

“The only way to make this car faster is to make it in Texas,” Perry tweeted last week.

Gov. Perry is not known for his support of “green” policies – he supports more offshore drilling and building the Keystone XL pipeline. But given the opportunity to bring jobs to his state, and sticking it to California in the process, he’ll apparently jump right on board.

While Texas has been one of the few states to shut out Tesla’s direct sales model, Gov. Perry is fighting to bring the electric car maker’s “Gigafactory” to San Antonio. Once completed, the $4-$5 billion factory is expected to bring 6,500 jobs to whichever state is lucky enough to land it. Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas are all reportedly in the running.

California was originally absent from this list, but the state put itself back in contention when lawmakers introduced legislation to streamline the regulatory and environmental permit process.

“Everything is on the table — tax credits, investment credits, hiring credits,” State Sen. Ted Gaines, the Republican co-sponsor of the bill, told Arizona Central.

Tesla is not expected to announce the final site for the Gigafactory until the end of the year.
