The actress says the honor meant "a great deal" to her amid talks that she will retire from acting to focus on humanitarian efforts.
It’s not easy being Angelina Jolie. She’s not only a talented and beautiful award winning actress and mother, but also a celebrated humanitarian. This week her efforts towards helping the world were celebrated as she received an honorary damehood on the Queen’s Birthday Honors List.
On top of promoting her latest movie Maleficent, Jolie has been pretty busy working towards preventing sexual violence. In regards to receiving the damehood, she said in a statement, “To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my life working to. Working on PSVI [Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative] and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine.”
This isn’t something new for Jolie. She’s spent years as the UNHCR goodwill ambassador working all over the world from visiting Syrian refugees to encouraging the improvement of nutrition in Ecuador.
This seems like just the beginning for her humanitarian efforts, as she recently revealed she might be focusing a lot more on that aspect of her life. At a Maleficent press conference Jolie said she is thinking about retiring from acting to focus on other things, “I’ve had a wonderful career and I’m happy to have had all those opportunities to tell stories and work for as long as I have. But I’m able to be selective and I would like to focus more on writing and directing; and above all I would like to focus more on my work with the UN and with PSVI.”
