Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and San Francisco's Ed Lee face off in the competition to bring a George Lucas Museum to a city near you.
George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars franchise, is looking to build an American art and movie memorabilia museum. Several mayors are competing to have the museum built in their city.
Ed Lee, the current mayor of San Francisco, is at the forefront of the competition. He had banners placed all over San Francisco trying to build public support and woo Lucas into staying in his city.
Several of San Francisco’s previous mayors, including Willie Brown and Dianne Feinstein, showed their support by sending letters to Lucas.
A possible site for the museum has been chosen in San Francisco. Mayor Ed Lee is hoping that Lucas will decide to stay and build the museum in “Seawall Lot 330”. However, plans to build the $300 million museum seem to have stalled in San Francisco.
Chicago is also competing for the museum. Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been trying to get Lucas’s attention hoping he will move the museum to Chicago. Mayor Emanuel established the Lucas Museum Site Selection Task Force to recommend the best place in Chicago for Lucas to build the museum.
The museum is designed to exhibit American cultural artworks, including memorabilia from notable movie works. It will include paintings from notable artists like Norman Rockwell, as well as movie props like the Millennium Falcon (piloted by Han Solo is Star Wars). The museum will also have exhibits about special effects technology, such as the technology used to make Toy Story or developing the sound for the light saber (the Jedi/Sith sword made from light in Star Wars).
