Kanye West booed at Bonnaroo for the second time

At one point during the set, West began shouting.

Rapper Kanye West is well known for his theatrics and aggressive self-promotion, but attendees at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee weren’t in the mood for it.

West promptly took the stage at 10p.m. Friday night, in front of a crowd of 90,000+ who had come to hear him perform hits off his latest album. But what they got instead were long-winded rants that started to overshadow his music and he was soon booed from the stage.

At one point during the set, West began shouting; “Where the press at? F— the press.”

According to eyewitnesses, West performed songs from his album Yeezus before launching into a nearly ten minute long rant towards the end of his set.“I ain’t going after nobody on the radio, I’m going after Shakespeare. I’m going after Walt Disney.”, West yelled to the crowd. “I’m going after Howard Hughes and Genghis Khan.” He took it a step further, comparing himself to musicians John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix.

“I am the number one muthaf—in rock star on the planet,” declared West. His outburst provoked the crowd into a phalanx of boos as concertgoers left to enjoy other performances and West exited the stage almost immediately.

This is the second time West has been booed by crowds at Bonnaroo. In 2008, the rapper appeared six hours late for his headlining performance prompting an angry response from the crowd that resulted in a shortened set. He publicly called out both festival promoters and fans for the way he was treated, prompting Bonnaroo organizers to declare him banned from performing at the event ever again. But due to his increasing popularity, West was permitted to return this year for another headlining appearance at the festival.
