The injury occurred when a hydraulic door on the Millennium Falcon came crashing down on him unexpectedly.
Star Wars fans around the world are certainly having a bad feeling about this news.
According to his son, Ben, Harrison Ford’s injured ankle may require a plate and screws to help repair the damage sustained from an accident on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII this past Thursday.
Ford, 71, is currently at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford recuperating from the injury which occurred when a hydraulic door on the Millennium Falcon came crashing down on him unexpectedly.
His wife, actress Calista Flockhart, had been planning on visiting her husband while he was shooting the much anticipated next installment in the Star Wars saga just outside of London. But now that he’s resting in a UK hospital she has flown to be at his side while he’s laid up and off his feet.
A report in Britain’s The Telegraph newspaper claims that the actor could be unavailable for several weeks while his injured ankle heals completely. Principal photography on the film is expected to continue in his absence.
A statement from Lucasfilm confirmed much of what had been speculated about the accident. “Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII. He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care”, the statement read. “Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates.”
Ford had been filming a scene on the Millennium Falcon set at Pinewood Studios when the door came crashing down upon him. Witnesses say he had been clutching his chest in pain when the incident occurred and he was airlifted from the set to John Radcliffe Hospital for tests and x-rays. But the extent of his injuries remain limited to his ankle, which will require a lengthy rehabilitation period.
The Health and Safety Executive of Great Britain, the country’s regulation authority on matters related to workplace safety, have begun an investigation into the matter and the overall safety of the production.
