Google will announce a new health system.
With Apple having announced HealthKit, a new fitness platform, at WWDC earlier this month, it makes sense that Google would want to release a competing system. Google will in fact be releasing their own fitness system at Google I/O later this month, and it will be called Google Fit.
The yet-to-be-announced platform will not be Google’s first attempt to enter the health industry after they closed Google Health in 2012 due to lack of interest. Analysts suggest that this was because Google’s focus was largely on aggregation rather than creating a rewarding platform for users.
Google Fit will be Android powered, and will connect to the users smartphone. According to sources close to Google, the platform will collect things like steps taken and heart rate, as well as a number of other fitness stats that sensors can pick up and relay back to the user.
Since the new wearable version of Android, Android Wear, was announced, we have not seen any announcements related to health or a dedicated health app on Android Wear. Despite this, such an app may be announced at Google I/O, to take place between June 24 and June 26.
It is likely that health will be a key factor for large tech companies in the next few years, especially because of the fact that Google and Apple could collect health information and sell to people with health problems.
While tech platforms that focus on health are set to take off, a major concern will be privacy, and tech companies will need to make sure that health sensors only work with verified apps. While some educated users know what an app wants to access when they click accept, most users will not be aware of apps wanting to access things like fitness sensors.
