Chia powder brands recalled due to salmonella link

Certain brands of chia powder linked to Salmonella outbreak, says CDC.

21 individuals from 12 states including New York and California were found ill with Salmonella linked to the consumption of chia powder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Two of those individuals have been hospitalized from the outbreak.

The statement issued by the CDC on Friday, June 13 warns consumers of the ongoing outbreak, detailing the risk of contracting Salmonella from certain specific brands of chia powder. Brands of chia powder recalled include Organic Traditions, Green Smoothie Girl, Navitas Naturals and Williams-Sonoma.

Chia powder is made from ground, dried chia seeds and  is a health supplement often added to foods to enhance dietary value. The product can be purchased from various locations, including specialty food stores as well as online.

Illnesses from the outbreak related to chia powder were reported in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. Across the border, “Canada has also reported similar cases of Salmonella in several provinces,” says the CDC.

Public health officials across the board are continuing to investigate the outbreak. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.

“Most people recover within four to seven days without treatment. Children younger than five, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness from Salmonella infection,” says the CDC.

The CDC also recommends households to check for the aforementioned recalled brands, as chia powder has a long shelf-life. They have cited, in addition, that individuals who have purchased any of the recalled products should either discard of them or return them to the point of purchase.
