Angelina Jolie named honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth II

Award-winning actress receives honorary dame title for her latest humanitarian efforts.

Mother, wife, humanitarian, and Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie now has yet another title – dame. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II gave Jolie the honorary title on Friday for her work combating sexual violence in war zones.

A dame is the female version of a knight, an appropriate title to give to Jolie for nobly sacrificing her movie career to focus more on humanitarian work. While she won’t be entitled to use the title “dame” before her name since she is not a British or Commonwealth citizen, Jolie said that “to receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to.”

Jolie joins a list of U.S recipients who have received honorary knighthoods that includes director Steven Spielberg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and former President Ronald Reagan.

Jolie, who serves as a United Nations special envoy, was in London this past week co-hosting an international summit on sexual violence. She was one of hundreds of people recognized in the queen’s annual Birthday Honors List for services to their community or national life. While Britain’s honors are always bestowed by the monarch, recipients are actually selected by committees of civil servants after they are nominated by the government and the public.

Angelina appeared on MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow Daily today to talk about one of her latest humanitarian efforts – the crisis caused by the armed conflicts throughout the Middle East.

“We’re lacking in leadership in the world in general,” said Jolie. “I don’t think there is an example of extraordinary leadership that will breakthrough the stalemate of what is happening in the world. I don’t know what exactly the best move to make would be. I think it would have been at the start of the war. Now i’m not sure what the exact right thing to do is because it’s not just Syria.”
