Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan has been ‘more responsive’ according to his rep, one day after the limousine bus that he was riding in was involved in a six-vehicle chain reaction car crash. One passenger was killed and four others, including Morgan, 45, were badly injured.
“While Tracy remains in critical condition, he has been more responsive today, which is an incredibly encouraging sign,” Morgan’s rep, Lewis Kay said. Morgan suffered a broken nose, broken ribs, a broken leg, broken femur and various other injuries.
“He had surgery earlier today on his leg,” Kay explained. “We expect him to remain in the hospital for several weeks. His family is tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”
Morgan is expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks.
The crash occurred at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning in the northbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike when a Walmart tractor-trailer struck the vehicle from behind. New Jersey State Police believe the driver, Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Ga. fell asleep behind the wheel and didn’t see traffic slowing ahead of him. When he tried to swerve to avoid impact it was too late.
Roper, a Walmart employee, has been charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto as a result of the crash. He has since turned himself in to police and posted $50,000 bail.
Bill Simon, President and CEO of Walmart U.S. issued a statement about the incident. “This is a tragedy, and we are profoundly sorry that one of our trucks was involved,” Simon said. “The facts are continuing to unfold. If it’s determined that our truck caused the accident, Walmart will take full responsibility.”
According to Simon, Roper has been placed on administrative leave.
