Chia seed powder linked to salmonella outbreak

Salmonella sickens approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. annually.

A recent salmonella outbreak, known as “sproutbreaks,” has sickened more than 70 people in the U.S. and Canada. The outbreak involves foods created from sprouted chia seeds or clover, according to federal investigators.

More thanĀ 10 of the affected individuals have been hospitalized to date.

For the chia outbreak, illnesses were traced to products sold by Health Matters America, including a product made from sprouted ground chia seeds, and another product made from sprouted chia and flax seeds. Ground chia powder was sold by California-based Navitas Naturals.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 21 people in 12 states have been sickened by the chia products. The Public Health Agency of Canada also reported 34 infections.

The CDC notes that as of June 9, 21 individuals have been infected with strains of Salmonella Newport (13), Salmonella Hartford (6), and Salmonella Oranienburg (2). No deaths have been reported.

Both stores, Health Matters and Navitas, have issued recall notices regarding their products via the Food and Drug Administration.

According to the CDC, salmonella sickens approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. annually, resulting in approximately 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths. Many people who become infected develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps between 12 to 72 hours following the infection.
