The young pop star will plead guilty to a lesser charge, pay a fine and complete anger management classes.
Next week pop star Justin Bieber will plead guilty to reckless driving, pay a fine and attend anger management classes as part of a plea agreement, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The plea deal resolves an alleged driving under the influence charge, stemming from a January arrest.
On Jan. 23, a then 19-year-old Bieber was arrested in Miami on suspicion of DUI, resisting arrest and driving without a valid license.
Reports at the time indicated that Bieber was “drag racing” with a friend, rapper Khalil Sharieff. While members of the Los Angeles Police Department who were on the scene also described such an event, no official charges were filed.
Sharieff is expected to also plead guilty to reckless driving and pay a fine.
At the time of Bieber’s arrest, a tox screening revealed the singer tested positive for THC, the main ingredient of marijuana, and had a blood alcohol level of 0.014 percent. The legal blood alcohol level for minors in the state of Florida is 0.02 percent.
Initially the proceeding judge insisted that Bieber produce, pay for and star in a public service announcement speaking out against drugs. Bieber’s lawyers were successful in quashing this stipulation of the plea agreement, arguing that the gesture would be inappropriate.
The judge also requested that Bieber attend drug and alcohol education classes, but his lawyers also successfully argued against this. They said that it was unnecessary, and might suggest that their client had a substance-abuse problem.
Critically, Bieber is able to avoid probation.
In addition, once they complete the conditions of their plea agreements, both Bieber and Sharieff will have the reckless driving charges expunged from their records.
