The 71-year-old actor was hit by a falling hydraulic door.
Star Wars actor, Harrison Ford, was injured in a shocking accident today while filming the latest installment of the franchise at Pinewood Studios in England. Ford was airlifted to a hospital after the hydraulic door of the spaceship Millennium Falcon fell down and crushed him underneath. This accident could delay the release of the much-anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII.
A spokesman for the Thames Valley police released this statement: “We were called just after 5pm to reports of a 71-year-old man being injured in an incident believed to involve a garage door. The man was airlifted to John Radcliffe Hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life threatening. The Health and Safety Executive is investigating.”
After being hit by the door, the actor fell to the ground in obvious pain and was taken by stretcher to a helicopter for treatment. Ford was then taken by air ambulance to John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford with a suspected ankle fracture. Onlookers claimed that the star was seen clutching his chest, but these reports are unconfirmed
Ford is reported to be undergoing further tests. A spokesman for the hospital declined to comment on whether he would be kept overnight.
Disney Studios released this statement: “Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII. He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care. Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates.”
While Ford does not seem to have received life-threatening injuries, his accident does pose a dilemma for the studio. A fractured ankle could put the actor into a cast for six weeks or more, not the best thing for playing a character in an action-packed film like this one. Filming began in mid-May, with Star Wars: Episode VII scheduled for a Christmas 2015 release.
The accident occurred at the beginning of a night shoot that was cancelled after Ford’s injury. His absence means that the schedule for the film will have to be totally redone to work around the character of Han Solo until the actor is able to return. The film has a large cast, so Ford does not appear in every scene, but for such a large-scale production every glitch is a major problem.
Both Disney executives and fans of Star Wars are hoping that Harrison Ford makes a speedy recovery and will be back on the set very soon.
